I know, I know, that sounds like a silly question. But it really isn't.

My knee began hurting last week. I felt confused. My knee almost never hurts. Later I discovered that my boss had injured his knee during his martial arts exercise.
The pain I felt wasn't mine.
That isn't an unusual experience for me. I'm very empathic. That makes it difficult to be around people at times, until I realize that what I am feeling or thinking isn't from within me, it is from someone else.

Here's a quick tip for those of us who tend to pick up feelings and sensations from others.
After touching someone, wash your hands thoroughly. Wash up to your elbows, then rinse by pushing the water down, through your arms and out your fingers. It really does help, especially when you pick up someone's pain.
Another tip: if you are unable to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer. It is usually adequate, at least for everyday emotions and physical sensations.
